In early 2003 I composed a set of eight short songs to poems found in The New Yorker consisting of vocal lines with simple chordal accompaniment. At the time I was interested in gebrauchsmusik, wanting my pieces to be performed by as broad a spectrum of ensembles as possible. Over the next couple of years I completely changed my mind, seeking to control every aspect of a work, agreeing with Feldman that a sound is inseparable from the instrument that plays it (though I have started to move away from that again!). So in 2006 I crafted a piano accompaniment based on the chords, and this proved successful enough for me that I composed a second set of eight songs, this time directly for piano, to poems by American poets, and then a third set of eight to poems by European poets. Not all the songs were of equal quality, so I ended up choosing my favorites, which came to fourteen, to comprise the song cycle Late Sun (though all twenty-four songs may be performed).

Originally, Late Sun was a song cycle for voice and piano composed in 2003 and 2006 comprising 24 songs in 3 books. Over time it was whittled down to 13 songs, and eventually I decided to make this version for voice and string quartet.

This composition should be performed in its entirety; unlike the piano version, it is not excerptable.
