Sky god girl
Poems by Rae Armantrout from “Poetry” Magazine

  1. Procedures
  2. Eyes
  3. Advent

Three Rae Armantrout poems appeared in the June 2009 issue of Poetry, and I liked them so much I immediately sat down and set them, one after another, for voice and small instrumental ensemble. The idea was that in each song one group of instruments would provide melodic accompaniment (inspired by organum) and one group harmonic accompaniment (inspired by spectralism), the marimba adding accents and color. In the first song the winds provide the melody and the strings follow the voice; in the second the strings the melody and the winds the harmony; and in the third song everybody does a little bit of everything.
