Septet (I. My eyes! The goggles do nothing/II. Everything’s coming up Milhouse!)
performed by Exceptet
Over the course of my Septet, various harmonic and rhythmic processes gradually unfold. In the first movement, My eyes! The goggles do nothing!, changing patterns in the bass drum interact with changing patterns in the ensemble. In the second and third movements, No, my son’s name is also Bort and We need more Bort license plates in the gift shop, the ensemble divides in twain. First the three treble instruments (clarinet, trumpet, and violin) play a series of lively arpeggiated patterns. Then the three bass instruments (bassoon, trombone, and contrabass) play a drunken, stuttering polka. In the final movement, Everything’s coming up Milhouse!, the bass drum acts as a kind of trigger, switching patterns on and off in different subsets of instruments. My Septet was written in January 2015 for Exceptet and lasts about twelve minutes.
