Subtitled Ten Tiny Songs, Because it is bitter, and because it is my heart (the title is from the Stephen Crane poem set as the ninth number) consists of just that, ten extremely brief songs for alto and small ensemble, some lasting less than ten seconds, the longest not exceeding two minutes. Because of their extreme brevity, each song generally represents a single unified gesture, and for that reason I selected a percussionist playing a variety of small instruments to color the stringy sounds of the mandolin and cello to accompany the dulcet low tones of a solo alto.
