After Agnes Martin

Part of my series of “palimpsests” in which older compositions are reworked, rethought, and recomposed, After Agnes Martin expands 2015’s Sextet for percussion, piano, and string quartet to full orchestra while retaining its austere character. Suggested by the work of my favorite painter, After Agnes Martin proceeds in much the same fashion as her paintings — linear musical ideas are punctuated by space, creating a kind of colorful musical grid. The title is meant in both senses: after as in following, mourning her passing, and after as in inspired by.
