Double Concerto
Like the Triple Concerto which preceded it, this Double Concerto is not a virtuoso feature for its soloists, bass flute and viola; instead, these two performers act as protagonists leading the ensemble through an orchestral narrative in continuous flux. Bass flute and viola were selected because they share the same range, quiet articulation, and dark, breathy tone—and because they’re two of my favorite instruments! The amplified breath and bow of the soloists are here matched to a small orchestra comprised primarily of low instruments without flutes or violas and the less than fifteen minute piece is cast in something resembling a classical three movement concerto.
