Concerto for String Orchestra

A companion of sorts to my Mandolin Concerto and Harpsichord Concerto, this Concerto for String Orchestra completes a loose trilogy which, like its predecessors, has no extramusical component; it is absolute music, so far as that is possible. Though principally inspired by John Wilson and the Sinfonia of London’s magnificent recordings of string orchestra repertoire, especially Bliss’s Music for Strings, Korngold’s Symphonic Serenade, and Howells’s Concerto for String Orchestra, I have shamelessly borrowed my movement titles from Stravinsky’s Concerto in D, the greatest work for strings of them all.
