To be perfectly honest, I don’t remember where the title came from. I thought it might be David Foster Wallace. Google brings up Johnny Dangerously, a movie I’ve never seen?
Anyway I wrote this piece when I was seventeen to play with my high school friends Max Taylor (horn) and Marc Guilford (trombone), using a brief theme Max thought up. Realizing this theme used only four pitches suggesting a modal scale, I created a piece entirely from variations of those four notes.
In three short minutes …his name is an adverb explores a variety of musical possibilities inherent in the motif supplied by my friend, stretching and shrinking it to create heterophony, pushing and pulling it into a smorgasbord of tasty musical shapes.
